5 Major Religions

Today in human geography class on January 3rd, we started a new unit on the 5 major religions and today we reviewed christianity and Islam. Christianity is the worlds largest religion and it has around 2.2 billion. People call them christians. Their geographic location is Europe, Southern Africa, and the Americas. Denominations are the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, protestants, Lutherans, methodists, baptists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians. The founder of christianity is Jesus Christ which is the Abrahamic in origin. The holy book is the Bible, new testament and or gospels. The beliefs are the Jesus is both human and divine- the son of god; he led a virtuous life; he was crucified, died, buried, and resurrected; he ascended into heaven where he reigns with god the father. Clergy is the pope is the head of the Catholic Church, priests are local authorities. Next we learned about Islam. The number of adherents is 1.5 billion which is the second largest religion. People call them muslim. The geographic location is Indonesia, Middle East, and North Africa. the denomainations are Sunnis which is 75-90% and Shiites which is 10-20%. The founder is Muhammad (570-632). The hold book is the Qur'an. The beliefs are monotheistic and abrahamic. The 5 pillars are (testimony, prayer, alms-giving, fasting, pilgramige). Muslims see their purpose in life as serving and submitting to Allah which is their god, and observing Islamic law.
